Founded: 23 Oct 1958, Paris, as International Film and Television Council - Conseil international du cinéma et de la télévision, at a meeting convened by UNESCO and attended by representatives of 39 international associations.

Aims: Unite the audiovisual professions - including new information technology, video cassettes, cable TV and satellites - and ensure their relations with UNESCO; act as spokesman for UNESCO and for the audiovisual professions in UNESCO's area of competence - education, science, culture and communications; carry out activities requiring cooperation among member federations; further the work of members by arranging meetings and consultations among them and acting as a link for exchange of information; provide the means for international activity on film and television.

Structure: General Assembly (every 2 years). Executive Committee (meeting annually), consist of President, 4 Vice-President, Treasurer, General Secretary and up to 10 further members. Bureau. Working Commisions (meeting annually). Includes national committees.

Languages: English, French.

Staff: Voluntary.

Finance: Members' dues.

Activities

Activities Main focus: cultural programmes, particularly festivals which include the award of "Prix du CICT" and a UNESCO stand demonstrating UNESCO's aims and methods.
Also organizes: demonstrations of films and videos on the handicapped; workshops for training the handicapped in audiovisual techniques; adult education programmes through the media; debates and meetings for specialists in education, science or culture.
Assists in integrating poorer countries in the communications network, for example: Spanish subtitles for francophone African films distributed in Latin America (funded by UNESCO); creation of Continental Audiovisual Centres for Asia, Africa (Ouagadougou), Arab countries and (planned) Latin America.
Has the right to participate in UNESCO programmes involving education, physical science, social science (youth, environment, human rights, philosophy, population) and external relations (Office of Information, statistics, copyright).
Partecipates in planning UNESCO programmes, being closely associated with UNESCO's Division on Freedom of Information within the Culture and Communications sector.
Carries out surveys at UNESCO's request: drugtaking in TV programmes; impact of "soaps"; selection of programmes for young people.
Other major programmes include filmed anthologies of national cinema and those carried out through 4 commissions: Copyright; Research; Education through the media; University.
National committees bring together personalities from TV and cinema professions, including critics, educators and researchers, to organize multidisciplinary national programmes and to participate in CICT international programmes.
